Classes in the Appalachian region play a vital role in preserving the rich culture of the area. By passing on traditional arts, crafts, and music to younger generations, our classes ensure that cherished traditions are carried on. With a diverse range of activities and skill levels, our classes attract people of all ages, fostering a sense of community and preserving our traditional heritage.
Appalachian Arts
Summary
Learn traditional songs, art, and storytelling. This class combines three components: performing a Reader’s Theater, writing original songs, and art/set design!
Alleghany JAM
Summary
Alleghany JAM provides traditional music instruction to students in grades 3 - 8 from three county elementary schools and homeschoolers in Alleghany County and Grayson County, VA. With over 23 years of experience, the program offers performances, enrichment activities, and fosters positive relationships with instructors. Small group instruction by traditional music masters is available after school, with about 60 students enrolling annually, choosing a primary instrument and two additional activities. The program ensures equity by providing free instruments and offering scholarships to students in need.

- Fees (full semester fee or 1st month payment) are required at the time of registration. We depend on donations, grants, and student fees to fund our program. We have always served reduced rates to families who were on free/reduced lunch to make JAM available to all!
- Student accounts that are in arrears must be paid in full by the 15th day of the following month, or the student will be suspended.
- All means are to be exhausted before a student is suspended for non-payment.
String Band for Adults
Summary
The adult string band class is for intermediate students. It offers class instruction in guitar, fiddle, banjo, and mandolin. You will learn to play together in a string band setting.
